The 2009 Teva Mountain Games

Published by david at 4:44 pm under Recreation

Looking for an exciting mountain event this summer? The 2009 Teva Mountain Games promises to be a thrilling time for all — participants and spectators alike! Held June 4th-7th of 2009, the Teva Mountain Games in Vail, Colorado, combines athletes, mountains, art and music in one intense, extreme celebration! With sponsors like North Face, Bud Light, GNC, SoBe, Costa Del Mar, Rossignol, amongst many corporations (both commercial and non-profit) contributing to the Games, it’s no surprise that the Teva Mountain Games are considered by many to be the event of the season! Hosted by the Vail Valley Foundation, this outdoor adventure event includes both amateur climbing competitions and the IFSC Bouldering World Cup!

Though this is a sport usually done in quiet, remote places in nature, the Games are held on artificial climbing walls designed to push competitors to their limits while providing fair and equal challenges for all participants. A new addition to the annual event is a new half-marathon — 13.7 miles of gradual uphill gain totaling a 2310 feet rise over the span of the race! 3000 outdoor athletes come from around the world to participate in this environmentally friendly event. Some 35,000 spectators arrive to cheer them on as they compete for over $100,000 in purses. Other mountain events include kayaking, rafting, mountain biking, road biking, fly-fishing, as well as the earlier mentioned races. There’s also a mountain photography competition, a demo area, a Green Light District (environmentally friendly expo), agility competitions for our canine companions, and free music concerts every night! The entire event is a huge party, an unparalleled celebration of life and lifestyle in the mountains!

The public Youth Bouldering games begin on Friday, June 5, 2009 (qualifying)and occur on Saturday, June 6th. Semi-Finals are at 11 am, Finals at 3:45. Citizen Bouldering Competition is held on Sunday, June 7th. The International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) Bouldering World Cup, separate of these two events, is an international competition and participation is by invitation only, but the Youth and Citizen bouldering games, sponsored by Pyramide, are open to all.

Be sure to write in time on your schedule for the Teva Mountain Games at the Mountain Plaza in Vail. The seven sports and 21 disciplines presented are sure to be the event of the summer season; You won’t want to miss it! For more information, go to www.tevamountaingames.com
